The End starts here
Finding the stronghold is the critical path to beating Minecraft. You need blaze rods from the Nether, ender pearls from Endermen, and at least 15 Eyes of Ender crafted before you start.
Before heading out: check your inventory. You need at least 15 Eyes of Ender, food, blocks for bridging, a water bucket, and your best armor and weapons. The stronghold has silverfish and the End has no return without killing the dragon.
Step 1: craft Eyes of Ender
Each Eye of Ender requires 1 blaze powder + 1 ender pearl.
Where to get materials
- Blaze powder: Kill Blazes in Nether Fortress. Each blaze rod makes 2 powder.
- Ender pearls: Kill Endermen in the Overworld (night) or the Warped Forest (Nether, safer).
- Craft at least 15 eyes. 12 for the portal, 3+ for triangulation.
Step 2: triangulate the stronghold
Stand in an open area and throw an Eye of Ender (right-click). Watch which direction it flies. Walk 300-500 blocks in that direction, then throw another.
The method
- Throw eye #1. Note the direction it flies.
- Walk 300+ blocks in that direction.
- Throw eye #2. If it goes in the same direction, keep walking.
- When the eye starts floating downward instead of forward, you're above the stronghold.
The eye went down. You're standing on top of the stronghold. Start digging straight down (carefully, with torches) until you hit stone bricks. That's the stronghold walls.
Step 3: find the portal room
Strongholds are underground mazes made of stone bricks. The portal room contains the End portal frame (12 blocks in a ring), a silverfish spawner, and a pool of lava.
Navigation tips
- Explore every corridor systematically. Mark dead ends with torches on the right wall.
- The portal room can be behind a wall. Break walls in dead ends if you've explored everything.
- Listen for silverfish. They spawn near the portal room.
- The portal room is always at the same Y-level as the rest of the stronghold.
You found the portal room. Count the empty frames. You need to fill each empty one with an Eye of Ender. Place them carefully, then jump in. There's no coming back without beating the dragon or dying.
