The final boss

The Ender Dragon is Minecraft's only real boss fight. It's not mechanically hard once you know the pattern, but first-timers often die to knockback, End crystal explosions, or falling off the island. Preparation matters more than combat skill.

Sidekick AI suggested:

First priority when you enter the End: do NOT fight the dragon yet. Destroy all the End crystals on the obsidian towers first. The dragon heals from them. Every crystal you leave up makes the fight longer.

Phase 1: destroy the End crystals

There are 10 obsidian towers with End crystals on top. Two have iron bar cages around them. The dragon heals continuously while any crystal is alive.

Strategy

  1. Shoot unprotected crystals with your bow from the ground
  2. For caged crystals, build up or ender pearl to the top
  3. Break the iron bars, then destroy the crystal
  4. Watch for the explosion. Step back or block between you and the crystal.
  5. The dragon may charge you while you're on a tower. Listen for the sound.
Sidekick AI suggested:

Crystal destroyed. That's 4 down. Keep moving around the ring. Don't stop on top of towers longer than you need to, the dragon swoops.

Phase 2: fighting the dragon

Once all crystals are destroyed, the dragon cycles between flying around the island and perching on the fountain in the center.

During flight

  • The dragon does charge attacks. Strafe sideways to dodge.
  • Shoot with your bow when the dragon is flying toward or away from you (easier to lead).
  • Don't stand directly on the fountain, the dragon breathes acid on it during flyovers.

During perch

  • The dragon lands on the fountain and is vulnerable to melee attacks.
  • Sprint to the fountain and hit the head (2x damage compared to the body).
  • The dragon breathes acid on the ground. Stand slightly to the side, not directly in front.
  • If using beds, place one on the fountain edge during perch, put a block between you and the bed, and right-click the bed.
Sidekick AI suggested:

Dragon is landing on the fountain. Sprint to it and hit the head. Stay to the side of the acid breath. You have about 10 seconds before it takes off again.

After the fight

The dragon drops a massive XP orb and the exit portal lights up. But don't leave immediately.

What to do first

  • Collect the XP (enough for ~70 levels of enchanting)
  • Look for the small gateway portal on the edge of the island (1-block gateway)
  • Throw an ender pearl through it to reach End Cities
  • End Cities have elytra (wings) and shulker boxes (portable storage)

Summary

The Ender Dragon fight is a two-phase encounter: destroy crystals, then damage the dragon during perch cycles. Preparation (good gear, blocks for building, bow with arrows) is more important than combat skill. Sidekick AI can call out crystal locations, perch timing, and the acid breath warnings in real time so you don't have to alt-tab to a wiki.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gear do I need for the Ender Dragon?

Diamond or netherite armor (Protection IV ideal), a bow with Power and Infinity, a diamond/netherite sword, at least 2 stacks of blocks (cobblestone or dirt), ender pearls, food, a water bucket, and slow falling potions if you have them.

How do I destroy the End crystals in cages?

Two of the End crystals are inside iron bar cages on top of obsidian towers. Build up or ender pearl to the top, break the iron bars, then hit or shoot the crystal. Be ready for the explosion, it deals damage.

Can I use beds to kill the Ender Dragon?

Yes. Beds explode in the End (like the Nether). Place a bed on the fountain when the dragon perches, click to 'use' it, and it explodes for massive damage. Bring 5-7 beds. Place a block between you and the bed to reduce self-damage.

What happens after I beat the Ender Dragon?

You get a huge XP drop, the exit portal activates (takes you back to your spawn), and a gateway portal appears (leads to End Cities with elytra and shulker boxes). You can also respawn the dragon by placing 4 End crystals on the exit portal.
