Preparation

The Wither is Minecraft's hardest boss. Prepare thoroughly before spawning it.

Sidekick AI suggested:

Don't summon the Wither until you're fully prepared. You need: full diamond or Netherite armor (all enchanted), a Smite V sword, a Power V bow with plenty of arrows, golden apples, and Strength potions. The Wither can kill you in seconds without good gear.

Required materials to spawn:

  • 4 blocks of Soul Sand (found in the Nether)
  • 3 Wither Skeleton Skulls (dropped by Wither Skeletons in Nether Fortresses)

Recommended gear:

  • Full diamond or Netherite armor (Protection IV)
  • Sword with Smite V (extra damage to undead, which the Wither is)
  • Bow with Power V and plenty of arrows
  • Golden Apples (regular and enchanted if possible)
  • Strength II potions and Regeneration potions
  • Milk buckets (cures the Wither effect)

Spawning the Wither

Build a T-shape with Soul Sand and place the 3 skulls on top:

  S S S (skulls on top)
    T (soul sand T-shape)
  T T T
    T
Sidekick AI suggested:

Place the skulls LAST — the Wither spawns the moment the third skull is placed. Make sure you're in your chosen arena before placing it. Back away immediately after the third skull — the Wither does a massive explosion when it spawns.

Important: When spawning, the Wither charges up with a blue shield for about 10 seconds. During this time, it's invulnerable. Back away and get ready.

Phase 1: Ranged (Above 50% HP)

The Wither flies and shoots explosive skulls. Use your bow.

Sidekick AI suggested:

Phase 1 — he's flying. Use your bow. Stay at medium range and dodge the skulls by strafing left and right. The blue skulls are slower but destroy blocks. The black skulls are faster but don't break blocks. Dodge everything.

  • Keep distance. The Wither's skulls deal heavy damage at close range.
  • Strafe while shooting. Don't stand still — the skulls track your position.
  • Blue skulls destroy blocks and inflict Wither effect (drains health over time). Dodge these at all costs.
  • Use golden apples when your health drops below 50%. The absorption hearts give a buffer.

Phase 2: Melee (Below 50% HP)

At half health, the Wither gains Wither Armor — it becomes immune to arrows and drops to the ground.

Sidekick AI suggested:

Phase 2 — he's on the ground now and IMMUNE to arrows. Switch to your Smite sword. Get in close and swing. Pop a Strength potion and golden apple before engaging. The Wither is more dangerous up close but you have no choice — arrows won't work.

  • Switch to your Smite V sword. This is why you brought it.
  • Pop Strength II for massive damage boost.
  • Stay aggressive. The faster you kill it in phase 2, the less damage you take.
  • Drink milk if you get the Wither effect (black hearts draining). Milk cures it instantly.
  • Use golden apples liberally. This is the fight to burn through your supplies.

The Bedrock Ceiling Trick (Easy Mode)

For a much easier fight, trap the Wither under the Nether's bedrock ceiling:

  1. Go to the top of the Nether (Y-127)
  2. Find bedrock with a 1-block gap you can reach
  3. Spawn the Wither so its heads are inside the bedrock
  4. The Wither gets stuck in the bedrock and can't move
  5. Attack it with your sword through the gap
Sidekick AI suggested:

Bedrock ceiling trap — this is the cheese strategy. The Wither spawns into the bedrock and gets stuck. You hit it from below with your sword, it can't shoot back. Takes about 30 seconds to kill this way. No shame in using it.

Summary

The Wither is a gear check and preparation challenge. Get Smite V, bring golden apples, and choose your arena carefully. Phase 1 is ranged, phase 2 is melee. Or skip the challenge entirely with the bedrock ceiling trick. Let Sidekick AI call out skull dodges and phase transitions while you focus on the fight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I spawn the Wither?

Never spawn it on the surface — the Wither destroys terrain and can escape. The safest location is deep underground in a long tunnel, or under the bedrock ceiling in the Nether (the bedrock traps the Wither and makes the fight trivial). If fighting fairly, a large underground chamber with room to dodge is ideal.

How do I get Wither Skeleton Skulls?

Wither Skeletons only spawn in Nether Fortresses. They have a 2.5% chance to drop a skull (5.5% with Looting III). You need 3 skulls total. Farm them in the fortress corridors — they're tall (3 blocks) so a 2-block ceiling passage lets you fight them safely while preventing regular skeletons from spawning.

What does the Nether Star do?

The Wither drops a Nether Star when killed. Use it with 5 glass and 3 obsidian to craft a Beacon, which gives area-of-effect buffs like Speed, Haste, Strength, and Regeneration. The Beacon is one of the most powerful utility items in the game.
