The Hollow Knight at full strength

Pure Vessel is what the Hollow Knight was supposed to be before the Infection broke him. No self-stabs, no opening to free-hit while he flails, no charity. Same moveset on paper, but every attack is faster, the combos are longer, and the punishment for a missed dodge is steeper.

Sidekick AI suggested:

Pure Vessel is a pressure test. He doesn't give you the easy openings the Hollow Knight does. Every punish you take, you earned.

The 5 attacks

Pure Vessel has fewer attacks than NKG but each one chains into long sequences. Recognition matters more than reaction here.

1. Triple slash

He swings his nail three times in quick succession, often advancing as he does. Each slash has a tighter window than the last.

Dodge: Dash back, dash back, dash through. The third dash is the punish dash — get behind him and land one hit on the recovery.

2. Dash slash

He dashes across the arena trailing a shockwave.

Dodge: Jump over the dash, then jump again to clear the shockwave. Pogo off his head if you can chain a downstrike — it's a free hit and a height reset.

Sidekick AI suggested:

Dash slash incoming. Jump twice. Pogo if you can. This is one of his most punishable openings if you read it early.

3. Void tendril burst

He plants his nail in the ground and erupts void tendrils that track your position.

Dodge: Move constantly. Don't commit to a direction. The tendrils have a short lifespan but track for the first half-second.

4. Shockwave slam

He raises into the air and slams down with a horizontal shockwave on impact.

Dodge: Jump the shockwave. The slam itself is dodged by simply not being directly under him — sidestep when he rises.

Heal window: After the shockwave dissipates, you have one full focus heal's worth of time. Take it.

5. Void blob spam

He floats and shoots void blobs in a fan pattern.

Dodge: Stand directly under him. The blobs spread; the cone under him is safe. Hit upward with Abyss Shriek for huge damage.

Sidekick AI suggested:

Void blobs. Under him. Abyss Shriek straight up. Your biggest damage window in the fight.

Pressure management

The thing that makes Pure Vessel harder than the Hollow Knight is the chaining. He moves from one attack into the next with very little dead time, so you rarely get the breath between attacks that you're used to. Survival isn't about any single dodge — it's about not panicking when the third attack starts before you've fully reset from the first.

Reset positioning constantly

Stay near the center of the arena. Corner positioning is death because his dash slash covers the full width. Centered means you can dash in either direction without running out of space.

Spell economy

You will have plenty of Soul. Use it for Shade Soul on heal windows and Abyss Shriek on the void blob attack. Hold Soul during pressure sequences — you don't want to burn a heal mid-combo.

Sharp Shadow is real here

Every shadow-dash through Pure Vessel does damage with Sharp Shadow equipped. Across a 2-3 minute fight, that compounds into significant chip damage on top of your nail DPS. The charm is worth two notches for this fight specifically.

The winning mindset

Pure Vessel is about consistency over a longer fight. You can win NKG on a great run with two clutch heals; you can't fluke Pure Vessel the same way. The kill comes from logging enough attempts that the chain patterns become predictable.

Key principles

  • Stay centered. Corner positioning loses to dash slashes.
  • Pogo when possible. Pure Vessel's head is a free hit on most jumping attacks.
  • Heal after shockwave slams. The cleanest one-focus window in the fight.
  • Abyss Shriek under void blobs. Your highest damage moment.
  • Don't panic in chains. The combo will end. Don't commit to a hit while it's still firing.

Summary

Pure Vessel is the boss the Hollow Knight wanted to be. Same shape, real teeth. The fight rewards recognition and punishes greed in equal measure. Sidekick AI is at its best here because calling out the attack one beat before it lands — “dash slash, jump twice” — is exactly the cognitive load you can't afford to carry yourself when you're already managing dodge timing and Soul economy at full speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What charms should I use for Pure Vessel?
Quick Slash + Unbreakable Strength + Mark of Pride is the canonical DPS loadout. Shaman Stone if you spell-cast. Dashmaster is good for the chained dash sequences. Avoid Grubsong/Joni heal-centric builds — there are heal windows but only short ones, so damage wins.
How is Pure Vessel different from the Hollow Knight boss?
Pure Vessel is the Hollow Knight at full power — no infection, no self-harm attacks, no easy phase. Same model, same DNA, but every attack hits harder, faster, and chains into longer combos. The Hollow Knight is a clean fight you can muscle through; Pure Vessel demands real pattern recognition.
Can I heal during Pure Vessel?
Yes, but the windows are tight. Best healing opportunities: after his shockwave attack lands (one focus), after the void tendril burst dissipates, and during the very end of a long dash combo. Don't try to heal mid-pressure — wait for a clean dead beat or you'll get punished out of focus.
Where does Pure Vessel sit in the Pantheons?
Pure Vessel is the final boss of Pantheon of the Knight (P4), and he reappears earlier in subsequent pantheons leading up to Pantheon of Hallownest (P5). Beating him in P4 is the achievement most players target; beating him in P5 is part of the longest gauntlet in the game.
How long does the fight take?
With Quick Slash + Mark of Pride + Unbreakable Strength and a Pure Nail, expect 2-3 minutes per attempt. Less if your DPS is dialed and you're confident on dodges. Most first kills come in around the 2-minute mark.
Is Pure Vessel harder than Nightmare King Grimm?
Roughly equivalent in difficulty, different in shape. NKG is rhythm-test — one correct dodge per attack, fast. Pure Vessel is pressure-test — long combos, less downtime, void tendrils tracking you. Players tend to find one easier than the other based on what kind of bossfight they're better at.
