The hardest dance in Hallownest
Nightmare King Grimm is a rhythm fight. Every attack has exactly one correct response. There are no phases, no gimmicks, no healing. You learn the 6 attacks, you react to each one correctly, you win. The difficulty is speed and consistency over a 2-3 minute fight with zero room for error.
This fight is a pattern test. Every attack has one correct dodge. Learn all 6, react correctly each time, and you win. Greed kills. One hit per opening, two max.
The 6 attacks (and how to dodge each one)
NKG has exactly 6 attacks chosen randomly. Memorize all of them.
1. Dash uppercut
Grimm dashes across the ground then uppercuts into the air. Dodge: Jump over the dash, then move under where he rises. Pogo off his head for a free hit.
2. Fire bats
Grimm floats in the air and shoots 4 fire bats in a fan pattern. Dodge: Stand directly under him. Dash through the lowest bat if needed. Hit him with Abyss Shriek upward.
Fire bats. Get under him. Abyss Shriek straight up. That's your best damage window in the entire fight.
3. Flame pillar
Grimm turns into a spinning flame and spawns 4 fire pillars from the ground. Dodge: Stand between pillars. This is your ONLY safe heal window. One focus-heal, then reposition.
4. Dive kick
Grimm appears in the air and dives diagonally at you. Dodge: Shadow dash through him as he dives. If you have Sharp Shadow, this is free damage.
5. Flame spawn
Grimm teleports to the center and shoots flame projectiles outward in an expanding circle. Dodge: Stand far from center. Jump over the low flames. The pattern is consistent.
6. Pufferfish
Grimm inflates and bounces around the arena trailing flames. Dodge: Shadow dash through each bounce. Stay low. Don't try to hit him during this, just survive it.

The winning mindset
NKG is not about maximizing damage. It's about never dying. One nail hit per opening is fine. Two hits is greedy but possible on some attacks. Three hits will get you killed.
Key principles
- One hit per opening. Greed is the number one cause of death.
- Sharp Shadow turns dodges into damage. Every dash-through is a free hit.
- Abyss Shriek under fire bats. This is your highest DPS window.
- Heal only during flame pillars. One heal per occurrence. That's it.
- Stay grounded. Jumping gives NKG more angles to hit you.
