Before the Fight

Cazador is in Cazador's Dungeon beneath the Szarr Palace in the Lower City (Act 3). You reach this fight through Astarion's companion quest.

Sidekick AI suggested:

Make sure Astarion is in your party — this fight requires him. Long rest before entering. Bring radiant damage if you can — Cazador is a vampire, and radiant damage is very effective against undead.

Preparation:

  • Astarion must be in the party. The fight won't trigger properly without him.
  • Radiant damage is extremely effective. Cleric spells, Paladin smites, and the Mace of Disruption all shine here.
  • Bring AOE. Cazador summons waves of vampire spawn that can overwhelm you if not controlled.

The Ritual Phase

When you enter the arena, Cazador is performing the Rite of Profane Ascension. Several vampire spawn are trapped in a ritual circle, being drained of their life force.

Sidekick AI suggested:

The ritual is in progress. You need to interrupt it by damaging Cazador. He's in the center of the ritual circle. Don't wait — engage immediately or the spawn prisoners will start dying.

Key mechanic: The ritual progresses each turn. If you don't engage Cazador quickly, prisoners die and he grows stronger. Rush him.

The Fight

Once engaged, Cazador fights as a powerful vampire lord with several unique abilities.

Cazador's attacks

  • Multiattack: Claw strikes with necrotic damage. Hits hard against low-AC characters.
  • Bite: Drains HP and heals Cazador. Keep him away from low-HP characters.
  • Mist Form: He can turn into mist to reposition. You can't damage him during this.
  • Summon Spawn: Periodically summons vampire spawn waves. These are the main threat.
Sidekick AI suggested:

He's summoning spawn — incoming wave of vampires. Use AOE now. Fireball, Spirit Guardians, or any area damage to clear them before they spread out. Don't let them surround your backline.

Dealing with spawn waves

The vampire spawn are individually weak but dangerous in numbers. They can overwhelm your party if left unchecked.

  1. AOE immediately when they spawn. Fireball, Spirit Guardians, Cloud of Daggers.
  2. Don't ignore them. They attack in packs and can stun-lock a character.
  3. Radiant AOE is ideal — Spirit Guardians damages them every turn and they're weak to radiant.
  4. Position a tanky character near the spawn point to absorb initial aggro.

Focus strategy

  • Turn 1-2: Rush Cazador to interrupt the ritual. Get in melee range.
  • Turn 3+: Split attention between Cazador and spawn management.
  • Keep AOE active. Spirit Guardians on your Cleric near the spawn zone solves most of the add problem passively.
  • Smite when you can. Paladin Divine Smites deal radiant damage and hit Cazador hard.
Sidekick AI suggested:

Cazador just used Mist Form — he's repositioning, you can't hit him right now. Use this turn to clear remaining spawn and rebuff. He'll rematerialize next turn.

Astarion's Choice

After defeating Cazador, Astarion faces a choice:

  • Complete the Rite — Astarion becomes a Vampire Ascendant. More powerful, but at a cost to his humanity and relationship with the party.
  • Refuse the Rite — Astarion stays a vampire spawn. Less powerful, but he retains his character growth and stays true to breaking free from his abuser's legacy.
Sidekick AI suggested:

Cazador is down. This is Astarion's moment. There's no wrong answer here — it depends on your roleplay preference. If you want mechanical power, the Ascendant is stronger. If you value the story and Astarion's growth, refuse the Rite.

Recommended loadout

  • Cleric: Spirit Guardians is the MVP spell for this fight. Passive radiant AOE that handles spawn waves.
  • Paladin: Divine Smites deal massive radiant damage to Cazador on each hit.
  • AOE caster: Fireball, Lightning Bolt, or similar for burst spawn clearing.
  • Items: Mace of Disruption (extra radiant on undead), potions of Radiant Orb, any radiant-damage gear.

Summary

The Cazador fight is about tempo. Interrupt the ritual fast, manage spawn waves with AOE, and burn Cazador with radiant damage. Spirit Guardians is the single most valuable spell here. Let Sidekick AI track spawn waves and ritual progress so you can focus on the fight itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to Astarion after the Cazador fight?

After defeating Cazador, Astarion can choose to complete the Rite of Profane Ascension himself (becoming a Vampire Ascendant) or refuse it (staying a vampire spawn but keeping his humanity). This is one of the most significant companion choices in the game. Completing the rite makes him more powerful but changes his personality.

Do I need Astarion in my party for the Cazador fight?

Yes, Astarion must be in your active party. If he's not present, you can't access the fight properly. The entire questline is Astarion's personal story arc, and the fight includes dialogue and choices specific to him.

Can I save the vampire spawn prisoners?

Yes. During the fight, there are vampire spawn trapped in the ritual circle. If you defeat Cazador without letting the ritual complete, they survive. If you're too slow and the ritual progresses too far, some may die. Prioritize stopping the ritual over pure DPS on Cazador.
